5 Hot Tips For Directing a Stage Play
By
Professor Miller Lucky Jr
.
(Assuming that you have selected a play that
peaks the universal interests of your audience, here are Lucky's five hottest tips you should consider when directing
a stage play.)
.
1.Read,
read and read, then analyze and research the entire play, especially the given circumstances, dramatic action, characters,
main idea (including plot, themes, major dramatic question and implication of the action—answers the main dramatic question),
character (must fully understand before casting) and moods of the play—unit by unit. Remember “Artistic
Unification” is critically important to the entire process of directing, so you must understand the play well in order
to communicate the idea to your company (especially actors and designers).
.
2.Take your time casting your actors and get the right ones for the right parts.
If auditioning and casting are done well, this will solve over half your directing challenges!
.
3.Organize a good rehearsal schedule and stick
to the plan as close as possible. Also, make sure to meet regularly with the production team and keep everyone
on the same accord—the same world of the play. Use exceptional communication with your entire team—motivate,
inspire and charm. I call it using your “Soul Attraction.”
.
4.Physically stage the play with exciting pictures, spectacle, sound and believable
acting. Continue rehearsing the work thoroughly and with efficiency.
.
5.Get a second eye (another director type or someone you trust to tell the truth)
to preview the play, as well as mock audiences (an audience brings to the work another level of spirituality).
Listen to comments with reservations but never be afraid to fix problems. I suggest you especially
check the beginning (disturbance), middle and end (climax) to make sure you have eliminated any noticeable distractions from your
work. Take a deep breath and pray!
.
